My maternal Grandmother was born 130 years ago today, on May 25, 1895.
Julia McFadden Dingle Lemon lived her entire life in Clarendon County, South Carolina. Her parents – Joseph McFadden and Julia Wallace McFadden – were also from South Carolina. They had been born into slavery, and were freed following the Emancipation Proclamation. I created both of these original mixed media pieces to honor my beloved Ancestor and they both feature my Grandmother’s heirloom family portrait as the centerpiece. The image with the map of South Carolina is a detail from my mixed media piece that is simply titled “Grandmother Julia.” “Ancestral Healing” is a tribute to Grandmother Julia’s legacy and features a gold halo around her head. God rest your soul Grandmother Julia. I love you so much. And I miss you. Thank you for your continued guidance, presence, and protection.
